What is a Professional Organiser?

The Australasian Association of Professional Organisers (AAPO) defines a Professional Organiser as someone who creates customised solutions to help others get organised. They help their clients find balance, restore order and maximise their resources. They provide ideas, information, structure, solutions, tools and systems which increase productivity, reduce stress and lead to more control over individual resources.

Who needs a Professional Organiser?

  • If your clutter causes you to waste time searching for items or purchase products you already have.
  • If you can not relax and enjoy your environment.
  • Those who face physical challenges when undertaking organising tasks or projects
  • If your selling or updating your home.
  • Busy mums or overworked professionals who don’t have the time or expertise to undertake the tasks themselves.
  • Small businesses that require assistance in developing and implementing filing systems, office set up or general administrative tasks.

Why should I hire a Professional Organiser?

The question is commonly asked why should I hire a professional organiser when I can do this myself. However if this is the case, why is the organising task/activity not completed then?

Clients put off organising tasks for a number of reasons such as the job is too big, they don’t know where to start, they don’t have the resources, skills or mobility required to complete the task and that is when a professional organiser can assist.

They also may not recognise the benefits an organiser can provide such as finding lost items, enabling you to enjoy your space again and providing options which you may not have thought about.

What can I expect when I contact Sorting Solutions?

First of all we will listen to your request and try to understand your situation. We will ask you some general questions and what your organising priorities are. Work practices and pricing will also be reviewed.

If you decide to proceed, a consultation is booked, to physically inspect the area to be organised and determine your needs and expectations of our service. Once the requirements of the task have been determined and both parties agree, the organising process will commence. Sorting Solutions will come prepared to start work on the initial visit.

What happens during an organising session?

Depending on your requirements you can expect a combination of sorting, categorizing, disposing, recycling, filing, storing and sourcing storage or filing products or providers (if required). Sorting Solutions will provide information and advise on how to meet your organising needs, as well as the ongoing support and motivation to get the job completed. An important part of the process is making decisions and we’ll help you through this.

For at least the first session we need you to be available for questions, queries and decision making. It is up to you as to how hands on you will be once the process begins.

During each session Sorting Solutions will assess how each client is handling the organising process and changes can be implemented where needed. We are well aware this can be a daunting task for some clients.

I am embarrassed by my situation!

Don’t be. Our job is not to judge you on your situation but only how we can help you achieve your goals.

Is it safe to let a stranger look through my papers and possessions?

The nature of our service means we come across a lot of sensitive client information. Total discretion and confidentiality is guaranteed and we abide by the AAPO Code of Ethics. Our contract also includes a confidentiality clause and we endeavour to make you as comfortable as possible with the process.

Do you do the actual hands-on work?

Yes we do. We come prepared for anything. We do, however, take into consideration health and safety when working with a client.

Do I have to buy lots of storage solutions or spend money on other organising tools?

Absolutely not. In most cases you’ll be amazed by what you already have that can be put to better use. Of course if your budget allows and the project requires it, we have a range of fantastic suppliers who can help tailor their solutions to your needs.

Can I claim Professional Organising services on my tax return?

Depending on your circumstances, professional organising services may be tax deductible. Please speak to your Accountant or contact the Australian Tax Office for clarification.

Where does Sorting Solutions offer its services?

Sorting Solutions currently offer services in and around the North Shore of Sydney, (Australia). Outer lying areas may incur an additional travel allowance. Interstate or overseas contracts can also be negotiated.

Will Sorting Solutions help me on a regular basis?

The purpose of our service is to help you become organised and self-sufficient as soon as possible, this is why we implement easy to use systems and teach you how to use them. We do recognise, however, that some clients like regular assistance and this can be accommodated.

Will you make me throw out my stuff?

What stays and what is disposed of will always be your choice. We simply ask the right questions to help you make the right choices.

Do you remove rubbish or items for donation?

Removal of recyclable items and rubbish are the clients’ responsibility, however we can provide further information on how this can be undertaken.

How long will it take?

Each Organising job is unique, as is each client. Varying factors such as the size of the space, the amount of clutter and your ability to make quick decisions means quoting time, or cost for that matter, is difficult.

Our experience shows that a 4 hour block of time is a great starting point and that 6-8 hours can make a substantial difference – we work to achieve as much as possible within the window of time you make available to us.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes. We make a commitment to help you and expect your commitment to the task as well. Therefore, 48 hours notice is required for cancellation. This allows us to possibly fill the appointment. Cancellations of less than 48 hours will be billed.

How do I pay Sorting Solutions?

Payment is requested on the day of service and can be made by cash, cheque or direct bank deposit. Paying for the balance of our service on the day means you don’t have to remember to do it later.

Are gift certificates available?

What do you give the person who has everything? A gift certificate from a professional organiser could be the perfect present. Sorting Solutions can provide gift certificates for different values and for different packages. They are available upon request.

How much will it cost?

The cost of each service will vary depending on factors such as additional travel costs, purchase of storage products or any discounts provided. Cost effective packages can be arranged. However our standard fee is $75.00 per hour.

I can’t afford to get Sorting Solutions to help me, as my house/office is too cluttered – what are my options

If you can’t afford an entire organising project, then we can just undertake a short consultation which will teach you the techniques involved in getting started on a project yourself. We can provide options and plans for handling the situation, rather than doing the hands on work (which can be time consuming). The techniques can be applied to the remaining areas.

We can help you take small steps such as working one wardrobe, desk or room at a time.
